“No matter what, nobody can take away the dances you’ve already had.” -Gabriel Garcia Marquez
I want to share with you the backgrounds that I create before adding the figures.
I spent about a week creating the above background before adding in the figure for ‘Fire Dancer.’ There are about six layers of acrylic paint. I layer, sand, scratch, layer, sand, scratch – until I feel the background is rich enough to proceed.
Here’s another example:
I’m enjoying this figure series. I find it a little difficult to paint with something specific in mind. Prior to working with the figure, I would start abstractly and then ‘see’ what images developed – using a much more free-form approach. That helped me not over think the painting. Sometimes I feel my figures get too forced. I don’t want to tell the whole story in my paintings.
“What could be more interesting or in the end, more ecstatic than in those rare moments when you see another person look at something you’ve made and realize that they got it exactly, that your heart jumped to their heart with nothing in between.” -Robert Motherwell
