“All paintings are abstract. Some abstract paintings also have pictorial representation or narrative content, but in essence they are first and foremost abstract because we have only paint.” -Robert Bissett
I read an interesting article the other day. Historians now believe that it was the women who created the early cave paintings. We’ve always assumed men were the painters because of the subject matter – most of the art related to hunting. However an archaeologist now believes the measurements of the ancient handprints (how the paintings were signed) suggest the majority of the painters were women. Ancient hand stencils were used to measure finger lengths to determine the gender of the artists who had left them. Interesting.
Anyway I created the above piece thinking about those women long ago who also felt the need to be creative and tell their stories. These women were probably worried about the safety of their mates out hunting. They also knew what supplies/food their families needed to survive. Here are a few images of some cave paintings that I used for inspiration.
